Before You Start: The Reality Check
Do NOT attempt FTMO if:
- You've been trading less than 6 months
- You've never been profitable on demo
- You can't afford to lose the challenge fee
- You don't have a tested trading strategy
You're ready if:
- You've been profitable 3+ consecutive months on demo
- You have a clear strategy with 50%+ win rate
- You understand position sizing and risk management
- You can control your emotions after losses
Critical: FTMO doesn't teach you to trade. It tests existing skills. If you're not profitable yet, practice 3-6 more months before spending money.

Pre-Challenge Preparation (2-4 Weeks)
Step 1: Master the Rules
- Download FTMO's full rules PDF
- Read it 3 times, take notes
- Focus on:
- Daily loss limit: 5% (kill most challenges)
- Max overall loss: 10%
- Consistency rule: Max 10% of profit in one day
- Minimum 4 trading days per phase
- Profit targets: 10% Phase 1, 5% Phase 2
Step 2: Create Your FTMO-Specific Trading Plan
Write down:
- Strategy: What setups do you trade?
- Instruments: 1-3 maximum (EUR/USD, Gold, NAS100, etc.)
- Timeframes: What charts do you analyze?
- Risk per trade: 0.5% Phase 1, 1% Phase 2
- Daily loss stop: If down 3%, stop for the day
- Profit target per day: 0.5-1% (slow and steady)
- Trading hours: When do you analyze/trade?
- Min trading days: How will you ensure 4 days?
Step 3: Practice on FTMO Demo (2-4 Weeks)
FTMO offers free demo accounts with exact challenge rules. Use it:
- Create free demo account at FTMO website
- Trade for 2-4 weeks following your plan
- Manually track:
- Daily P&L vs 5% limit
- Overall drawdown vs 10% limit
- Consistency (no day > 10% of total profit)
- Trading days count
- Only buy real challenge when you "pass" demo 2-3 times
Phase 1 Strategy: Getting to 10%
Days 1-5: Foundation Building
Goal: 2-3% profit, zero rule violations
- Risk: 0.5% per trade maximum
- Trades: 3-5 total for the week
- Strategy: Only A+ setups, no forcing trades
- Psychology: Getting comfortable with the pressure
Critical rules for Week 1:
- After 2 consecutive losses, stop for the day
- If you hit 2% daily profit, consider stopping (consistency rule)
- Track every trade in a journal
- Ensure you trade at least 4 separate calendar days
Days 6-15: Momentum Building
Goal: Reach 5-7% total profit
- Risk: Still 0.5% per trade
- Trades: 1-2 per day average
- Focus: Quality over quantity
- Danger zone: Overtrading because you're ahead
Consistency Rule Management:
If your target is 10% ($10,000 on $100k account):
- Max profit per day: $1,000 (10% of total target)
- If a trade is running to $1,200, close partial profits
- Spread your wins across multiple days
Days 16-30: Finishing Strong
Goal: Hit 10% without violations
- Scenario A (at 9%): One more good day needed. Stay patient, don't force.
- Scenario B (at 7%): Need 3% more. Take 5-6 quality trades over remaining days.
- Scenario C (at 11%): You're done! Stop trading or trade ultra-conservatively.
Common Day 25-30 mistakes:
- Panic trading because time is running out
- Forcing trades on low-quality setups
- Risking 2-3% per trade to "speed up"
Better approach: If you're at 8% on Day 28, take 2-3 clean trades on Days 29-30. If they don't work, accept failure and retry. Better to fail following your rules than blow up gambling.
Phase 2 Strategy: The 5% Target
Phase 2 is where most people relax and blow it. Don't.
Key Differences from Phase 1
- Lower target: 5% vs 10% (easier)
- More time: 60 days vs 30 (less pressure)
- Same rules: Daily loss, overall loss, consistency, min days
- Mental trap: "I passed Phase 1, I've got this" → overconfidence → violation
Phase 2 Week-by-Week
Weeks 1-2: 1-2% profit
- Start ultra-conservative
- Risk 0.5% per trade
- Get comfortable again
Weeks 3-6: Reach 4-5% total
- Now you can risk 1% per trade
- But only on A+ setups
- Still tracking consistency rule
Weeks 7-8: Finish and stop
- Once you hit 5%, STOP TRADING
- Or trade with 0.25% risk just to stay active
- Protect your win
Risk Management: The #1 Success Factor
Position Sizing Formula
For 0.5% risk per trade on $100k account:
- Max loss you can afford: $500 (0.5% of $100k)
- Your stop loss distance: e.g., 50 pips
- Pip value for lot size: $10 per pip for 1 standard lot
- Calculation: $500 / (50 pips × $10/pip) = 1 lot maximum
Always calculate BEFORE entering:
- What's my stop loss in pips/points?
- What lot size gives me 0.5-1% risk?
- Double-check on calculator
Daily Loss Management
5% daily limit = $5,000 on $100k account. But use these buffers:
- Personal daily limit: 3% ($3,000)
- Hard stop: 4% ($4,000) - close everything and walk away
- Never reach actual 5%: Slippage, spread, gaps can push you over
Consecutive Loss Rules
- After 1 loss: Review the trade. Was it valid? Stick to plan.
- After 2 losses: Close platform for 2 hours minimum
- After 3 losses in one day: Done for that day, no exceptions

Pre-Trade Checklist
Before EVERY trade, ask:
- Is this an A+ setup according to my strategy?
- What's my exact entry, stop loss, take profit?
- What's my risk (dollars and %)?
- Am I trading emotionally or strategically?
- How much have I lost/made today already?
- Would I take this trade if I wasn't in a challenge?
If you answer "no" or "I don't know" to any: Don't take the trade.
Dealing with Losses
Wrong Response: "I lost $200. I need to make it back NOW. Let me take a bigger trade."
Right Response: "I lost $200. That's 1 loss. I have 29 days left. I'll take the next A+ setup when it comes. Time is on my side."
Dealing with Wins
Wrong Response: "I made $800 today! I'm on fire! Let me trade more!"
Right Response: "I made $800 today. That's great. I'll stop for today to avoid overtrading. Tomorrow is another opportunity."
Consistency Rule: The Hidden Killer
FTMO's consistency rule: No single day can exceed 10% of your total profit.
Example Scenario
- Phase 1 target: 10% = $10,000 profit needed
- Max profit any single day: $1,000 (10% of $10,000)
How to Avoid Violations
- Track daily profit in real-time
- If approaching $1,000 in one day:
- Close partial profits on running trades
- Move stop loss to breakeven
- Don't take new trades
- Spread wins across days
- Use tools like ElitePropX to auto-track consistency
Swing Trader Problem
You enter a swing trade Monday. It runs to +$1,500 by Friday. You close Friday = $1,500 on one "trading day" = Violation if total profit is under $15k.
Solution:
- Close partial profits on Wednesday ($500)
- Close more Thursday ($500)
- Close rest Friday ($500)
- Result: 3 days with $500 each = no violation
Minimum Trading Days Strategy
You need 4 trading days minimum. But don't cram them:
Bad Approach
- Day 1: Trade once
- Day 2: Trade once
- Day 3: Trade once
- Day 4: Trade once
- Days 5-30: Trade aggressively
Problem: Your "real" trading in days 5-30 isn't spread across min days.
Good Approach
- Trade naturally throughout the 30 days
- As long as you open trades on 4+ different calendar days, you're fine
- Most traders naturally hit 8-15 trading days
Safety Check
Keep a calendar. Check off each day you trade. On Day 25, ensure you've traded at least 4 days already.
Common Failure Points & How to Avoid Them
Failure Point #1: Daily Loss Limit (35% of failures)
Cause: One bad morning, down 5.2%, challenge over.
Prevention:
- Stop at 3% daily loss
- Set account-wide stop loss
- Use hard "3 losses = done" rule
Failure Point #2: Consistency Rule (30%)
Cause: One big winning day exceeds 10% of total target.
Prevention:
- Track daily profit live
- Close partials when approaching limit
- Use automated tracking tool
Failure Point #3: Overtrading (20%)
Cause: Taking 10-20 trades per day, forcing setups.
Prevention:
- Max 3-5 trades per day
- Only A+ setups
- Quality > quantity always
Failure Point #4: Last-Week Panic (10%)
Cause: Day 28, only at 7%, desperately forcing trades.
Prevention:
- Aim to hit target by Day 20
- Accept that failing while following rules > blowing up gambling
- Retries are cheaper than bad habits
The 30-Day Roadmap
Days 1-10: Aim for 3-4% profit
- Risk: 0.5% per trade
- Trades: 6-10 total
- Focus: Getting comfortable, zero violations
Days 11-20: Reach 7-8% total
- Risk: 0.5-0.75% per trade
- Trades: 8-12 more
- Focus: Consistency, tracking daily profits
Days 21-25: Hit 10% target
- Risk: 0.5-1% per trade
- Trades: 4-6 quality setups
- Focus: Closing out strong, no rush
Days 26-30: Protect your win
- If at 10%: STOP or trade 0.25% risk
- If at 9%: One clean trade, then done
- If at 7%: Stay calm, take quality setups

What to Do If You Fail
- Review what went wrong:
- Daily loss limit? → Work on stop-loss discipline
- Consistency rule? → Practice partial profit-taking
- Overtrading? → Limit trades per day
- Wrong strategy? → Back to demo for refinement
- Practice the fix for 2-4 weeks on demo
- Retry when you've "passed" the demo consistently
- Consider starting with a smaller account ($10k-$25k) if $100k failed
